Naas defeated Carbury by four points after extra time in a thrilling encounter in Newbridge on Sunday. This was the 6th. time that Naas have won this competition in its 100 year history. Naas also won this competition in 1921, 1928,1929, 1930 and 1995.
Naas started well but Carbury took control in the second quarter with four unanswered points and an Eoin O’Flaherty penalty to lead by four at the interval 1 – 7 to 0 – 6.
Naas fought back in the second half and went two ahead as the game went into injury time. Two late Eoghan o’Flaherty points to send the game to extra - time.
Naas controlled the extra-time scoring three points to one for Carbury in each half to win by four.
Naas opened the scoring with two Darragh Kirwan points. Carbury replied with a Morgan O’Flaherty point. Then Eamonn Callaghan and Eoghan O’Flaherty swapped points. A Barry Reynolds “45” gave Naas a 0 -4 to 0 – 2 lead after ten minutes.
Eoghan o’Flaherty and Jimmy Dunne scored two each . Naas replied with an Eamonn Callaghan free. An Eoghan o’Flaheety penalty gave Carbury a four point cushion. The half ended with Callaghan and O’Flaherty exchanging frees. At the interval Carbury led 1 – 7 to 0 – 6.
Naas opened the scoring in the second half with a Luke Griffin point and James Kelly replied for Carbury. A Luke Griffin goal after seven minutes heralded the Naas comeback but Carbury replied with points from Eoghan O’Flaherty and Jimmy Dunne to stay three clear 1 – 10 to 1 – 7. A 13th. minute Darragh Kirwan point reduced the arrears to two. Carbury replied with an O’Flaherty free and a Justin Reilly point to lead by four at the end of the third quarter.
It was now that Naas put their stamp on this match scoring six unanswered points between the 16th. and 27th. minute from Darragh Kirwan(2), Eamonn Callaghan(2), Luke Griffin and Brian Kane to go two points clear. Eoghan O’Flaherty and Colm Joyce swapped points before two injury time points from O’Flaherty tied the game at the final whistle 1 – 15 each.
In the first period of extra-time Darragh Kirwan and Eoghan O’Flaherty swapped points. Naas seemed the stronger outfit now and were driving forward particularly up the right wing. Two points from Dean McHolmes and Brian Kane gave Naas a two point cushion at the break.
Kirwan was again on target at the start of the second half but James Kelly replied for Carbury. The Naas captain Eamonn Callaghan put three between them before Colm Joyce put the icing on the cake to win by four.
