19th Annual Naas GAA U10 Hurling Blitz   17/06/2018

The Annual Naas U10 hurling blitz took place this year on Saturday the 16th of June in the Naas GAA Club. As ever the pitches and grounds were in spectacular order and huge credit is due to Andy Doyle and Tommy Loughran and the grounds team for having the club looking so well to all our visitors.

This year saw the club hosting teams from Cork – Killeagh and Éire Óg, Tipperary – Newport and Cappawhite, Limerick – Caherline, Wexford – Glynn Barntown, Kilkenny – Dicksboro, Galway – Portumna and Kildare with Naas, Ardclough and Éire Óg / Corra Choill.

With 16 teams representing 11 clubs the matches were coming very fast once the blitz started. Four provinces with four teams each meant three games for every team.

From early on it looked like Killeagh, Newport and Portumna were playing very strong hurling. All games were played on time and in very good spirit. Credit is due to all the mentors, umpires and lines persons who showed complete respect to the referees and to the children playing.

Naas the host club were involved in some fantastic games and were very unlucky to lose some games by the minimum margin.

After the first round of games, Killeagh from Cork and the combined club for the day of Portumna and Cappawhite were scheduled to play the club of the day as the last match.

At the break the crowd was entertained by the Maynooth Brass Band – who then lead the players in a parade around the pitch before the last round of matches.

The ground stood to the National Anthem and players dreamed of Croke Park. When the matches resumed it was obvious that the players felt they were in Croke Park and played like that too.

All of the teams received participation medals and some fruit and treats for taking part in the blitx. The last matches saw Killeagh come out on top as club of the day.

The blitz was a tremendous success and huge gratitude was expressed by Paul Murphy Naas Juvenile Hurling Development Officer on Aoife O’Rourke and Marc Crithlow for the work they, their fellow mentors and the parents of the Naas 2009 group did in making the 19th Annual U10 Blitz such a success.
