Kildare Senior Camogie Championship

Semi Final

17th September 2017

Naas 2.10

Celbridge 4.10

Naas’s journey in the 2017 Senior Camogie Championship came to an end at the semi-final stage on Sunday 17th September in a sunny Hawkfield following a fantastic battle with Celbridge.

The championship campaign actually began against Celbridge last June and to look at the score lines from that round 1 fixture where Celbridge completely outplayed Naas to this closely contested semi final on Sunday is a great reflection of the development and growth of this team over the past few months.

The match started at a flying pace with Celbridge scoring a cracking goal in the first 60 seconds. Credit to Naas they did not let this unsettle them and soon got into their stride with Aine Conway’s free taking ability allowing Naas get themselves right back into the game.

The Naas back line were under tremendous pressure throughout the first half, but fantastic work from Sarah Cullen, Amanda Davitt and Bronagh McLernon kept the gap between the teams to two points at half time.

The crucial period came early in the second half when Celbridge scored 3 goals in quick succession to open up a sizable lead. However this only succeeded in Naas showing their true strength as they hit back with two fantastic goals, the first of these coming from great work by Fiona Trant to win the ball on the edge of the square allowing Aoife Fitzgerald to finish it to the net, and the second a cracking free from Aine Conway which flew past 5 Celbridge players to end in the back of the net.

With the game beginning to turn in their favour Naas simply ran out of time and the experience of the Celbridge team shone through in the final 10 minutes to allow them to close out the match.

It was a brave effort from this very young Naas team and with the wealth of experience gained in this exciting 2017 campaign, it is clear that this will certainly be a team to watch in the Senior ranks in 2018.

Well done to the team who have represented their club with pride in 2017.
