U14 Kildare Camogie FEILE A Report   27/04/2017

The 2017 Kildare Feile A Camogie final took place last Saturday evening (April 22 6pm) in Maynooth GAA Club.  The competition was a straight final comprising of a full match (60 minutes) and between Naas and Celbridge.  (Both teams competing in 2017 Dublin League for the first time this year).  The weather was right and a large group of Naas Camogie Supporters travelled over to support the excited but apprehensive girls.

The game got off to a great start for Naas with Katie Whelan scoring a goal in the first 2 minutes.  This was followed almost instantaneously by a good connection between Sophie Browne and Tara Doorey and the ball went over the bar.  Katie Whelan scored another point and a Sophie Browne pointed a free followed by a point by Tara Doorey.  This was followed in the first 12 minutes of a game with a goal from Anna Burke and another point from Katie Whelan.

Naas no doubt were off to a great start.  The girls demonstrated their skill with connections between Sarah Carroll and Sophie Browne leading to another point been scored from outside the 45m line and a further demonstration of skill where an excellent pass from Aoife McCarthy to Tara Doorey to Anna Burke in the forward line lead to another point.  19 minutes in we conceded a goal to Celbridge with the score Naas 2:7 Celbridge 1:0.

A free from centre field taken by Sophie Browne in the 26th minute landed at the right place allowing Aida McNamee to strike a goal.  A low strike from Saidhbh Farrell to Katie Whelan lead to a Naas 45 which Sophie Browne scored a point from.  Celbridge had one last attack and scored a goal right before the half time whistle and half time score (Naas 3:8 Celbridge 2:0)

Second half started with the ball continuously in the Celbridge defence .  Tara Doorey struck a short low ball that landed in the back of the net and Aoife McCarthy scored an amazing point.  A free against Naas in the back line allowed Celbridge to score a point.  However our excellent back line got right back on track when Eva Lynch cleared to Tara Doorey to Anna Burke who landed it over the bar right in front of the goals (Naas 4:10, Celbridge 2:1).  Sophie Browne scored another 2 points from 45’s followed by points from Sarah Carroll & Tara Doorey.

Celbridge than scored a point but it was quickly followed by a point by Emma Kearns.  The final 10 minutes of the game demonstrated some near miss score opportunities from Naas with one last point by Sophie Browne.  Celbridge however did get one more goal opportunity to the final score Naas 4:16 Celbridge 3:2 and Naas Victory.  Our 20 victorious girls all played their hearts out in a skilful manner and no doubt this county Feile final will be in their memory for quite a long time.

Congratulations girls and keep focused as you prepare for the National Feile competition.
